The story
I've visited Morocco, specifically the Medina in Marrakech, several times. The following two galleries feature photos from my trip in November 2017, when I led a small group of Bulgarian travelers to the country.
The Medina is an extraordinary and bustling place, which may present a challenge for first-time visitors. Founded in 1070 by the Almoravid dynasty, Marrakesh Medina boasts unique and special architecture. In recognition of this, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site in 1995. Like all ancient cities, Marrakech Medina was built within a protective wall featuring strategic gates to defend against potential intruders.
Today, navigating the labyrinth of souks and narrow passageways is straightforward with the aid of cell phones and their installed maps. In earlier times, local boys earned money by guiding lost tourists out of the Medina.
The old city, or Medina, meaning "a city" in Arabic, consists of several interconnected neighborhoods. Each neighborhood typically features four key elements: large and small mosques, public steam baths known as Hammams, and a public oven. These are usually situated in the center of the quarter, adjacent to a square where the main activities take place.
As evident from the photo galleries below, the Medina in Marrakech is a paradise for photographers. However, caution is advised as I experienced a theft - my cell phone was stolen from my hand while I was leading another group. Despite this, the Medina is a unique place worth visiting; just remember to be mindful of your belongings.
