About the place

It was getting dark and extremely cold (about minus 40C). We drove through the old part of Yakutsk, where the old and shabby wooden houses still stand. Here I returned later on my own. Although it was already dusk, I managed to walk through the neighbourhood and photograph some of the old houses. Most of them are already in poor condition and on the verge of collapse. Between them slowly but surely rise huge new apartment blocks. The image with the apartment blocks between the old houses, against the background of the smoking chimneys of the heating plants, seemed eerie to me.

It was getting dark; the night lights were on, hurried residents drifted through the fog of the frozen city. Truly surreal!
