Fes, Morocco; September 20, 2021; Chouara Tannery is the largest tannery in the area, as well as being one of the oldest. This tannery has a rich history and has been operating for centuries, continuing to produce leather in the same fashion as it did in its early days. The tannery's unique and traditional process involves the use of natural dyes and materials, such as cow urine, pigeon excrement, and quicklime, which are used to soften the hides and remove hair. The hides are then washed in nearby vats and hung to dry on surrounding terraces. This process has been passed down through generations of craftsmen, making it not only a historical landmark but also a living museum of the traditional methods of leather production.
